Shell Island Nature walk
This is a circular walk
Time : 1.5 hours
Navigation : None
Effort : Easy flat walk
Technicality : None
Wildlife : Herons, rabbits, moles, wild fruit berries, mussels, crabs,
eels, butterflies
Starting from the boating lake on Shell Island
walk over the old dam, turn left and continue on towards the
Airfield. Before the airfield turn left and walk down the Nature walk,
this is not signed but is an obvious pathway. Continue down the path, there are
some very secluded camping spots down this track. After around 5 minutes
walking the footpath begins to break up and become a rough slate covered
footpath, this can be VERY slippy if wet. During the high tides the tide line
can reach this footpath so care should be taken if walking this footpath at high
tide to ensure you are not cut off by the tide. To your right you now see the
old North Runway for the airfield and warning lights indicating possible air
traffic. Walk through the gate and continue on. You are now in a farm
field. During summer this field is very busy with wild rabbits. Stay on
the footpath and walk towards the bracken. There are many wild berry bushes
here. Walk through the kissing gate and turn left onto the causeway
road. Continue on this road back to Shell Island taking care at all times
looking out for traffic
